Long-term Storage Increases The Risk Of Moisture Absorption In Ac Line Reactors.

Publish Time: Author: Site Editor Visit: 2

If you have an ac line reactor sitting in a warehouse for months, it may be degrading before it ever reaches the factory floor. While these components are built for industrial durability, prolonged storage—especially in non-climate-controlled environments—leads to significant moisture absorption in the insulation layers, potentially causing catastrophic failure upon power-up.

How Moisture Affects Your Reactor Performance

The longer an ac line reactor for vfd remains in storage, the higher the risk of "wicking." The copper or aluminum windings are separated by insulation materials that can act like a sponge. Over time, atmospheric humidity penetrates these layers.

When you finally install a damp reactor, the heat generated during operation can cause the trapped moisture to expand rapidly, leading to:

  • Insulation breakdown and internal short circuits.

  • Corrosion of the core laminations.

  • Reduced service life of the connected motor drive.

The Critical Difference: AC vs. DC Reactors in Storage

Whether you are managing an ac dc reactor inventory or specific input filters, the storage requirements remain stringent. An ac input reactor is typically the first line of defense for a variable frequency drive; if its magnetic integrity is compromised by rust or moisture-induced impedance shifts, it cannot effectively manage harmonic distortion or voltage spikes.

Best Practices for Storing and Recommissioning

To ensure your equipment remains operational, follow these technical :

  1. Controlled Environment: Store components in a dry area with relative humidity below 60%.

  2. Insulation Resistance Test: Before installation, use a megohmmeter to check the insulation. For a standard 480V reactor, a reading below 100 Megohms often indicates moisture ingress.

  3. The Drying Process: If a reactor is found to be damp, it must be dried in a professional oven at approximately 80°C to 100°C for several hours before applying full line voltage.

By treating your stored inventory with the same precision as your active machinery, you prevent costly downtime and ensure your power quality remains stable.
