Is Your Frequency Converter Malfunctioning? Common Abnormal Behaviors Of The Control Board

Often, when equipment in a factory suddenly stops, everyone's first reaction is to check the motor, but in fact, the culprit is a malfunction in the control board of industrial frequency converter. As the command center of the entire machine, a problem with the control board can bring the entire production line down. Those who spend time on the front lines of maintenance will find that these faults are often deeply hidden, unlike burnt-out modules which are immediately visible; they require considerable effort to locate.

How to Determine if the Control Board is Faulty

When watching the display screen, if you notice the following, you should be suspicious:

  • Screen completely dark: If the power circuit breaker has been ruled out and the switching power supply is normal, then the main control board's power supply circuit is likely faulty.

  • Gibberish or abnormal display: This is the most troublesome. Program malfunctions or aging memory chips can cause control logic corruption.

  • Parameters cannot be changed: If the buttons are not broken, but settings cannot be saved, it indicates that the EEPROM chip on the control board has reached the end of its lifespan.

  • Unexplained alarms: A persistent overcurrent alarm despite a light load often indicates a faulty operational amplifier in the current sensing circuit, sending false signals to the CPU.

Fine dust in the environment:

Many workshops have a lot of metal dust. These small particles get into the casing and fall onto the circuit board. With increased moisture, they can cause short circuits. Especially among densely packed surface-mount components, a short circuit can render the CPU unusable.

The culprit of the cooling fan:

Don't underestimate that small fan. If it runs slowly or stalls, the electrolytic capacitors on the control board will bulge under high temperatures. Once the capacitors dry out, the filtering effect deteriorates, increasing interference to the logic circuits, leading to various errors.

External force damage to wiring terminals:

Using excessive force when wiring can easily cause cracks in the solder joints on the control board. This type of loose connection fault is the hardest to diagnose. The machine vibrates briefly, then stops, then resumes normally, which is incredibly frustrating.

What to do if you encounter a malfunction

For problems like frequency converter 50hz to 400hz, it is recommended to start with the simplest external cleaning. Use a blower to remove dust and check for discolored resistors or leaking capacitors. If these surface checks don't solve the problem, you'll need to use an oscilloscope to measure the crystal oscillator frequency and the chip's voltage levels. If you still can't fix it, having a professional repair technician replace the entire board is usually the easiest solution.
